Students from LC3, the third year performance group of London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS), were invited to participate in a series of events at the University of Naples, and in Prato, Italy, during the international conference on ‘Movement Studies'. The event, organised by two contemporary dance networks in Italy, Artgarage and rAn network, and by Fortunato Angelini, a former LCDS student, was aimed at promoting dance as a recognised university degree in Italy.
The international network created by Artgarage and rAn also includes the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Together with London Contemporary Dance School, the two schools are amongst the leading vocational training conservatoires, where dance artists train within a higher education context.
LCDS Faculty member, and LC3 Artistic Director, Patricia Rianne, was on the panel of speakers, together with Professor Cho Yi, director of the Contemporary Dance department of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Movement Studies was attended by key figures from contemporary dance.
A group of LC3 students also performed at the Teatro Mediterraneo in Naples and at the Cantieri Culturali Ex Macelli in Prato, for an audience of over 750 people, together with a performance group of students from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The programme, including pieces by world famous choreographers, including Richard Alston, and otherworks created by LC3 students Nikki Bakolis, Laura Johnston, Marta Masiero and Giorgio Azzone, saw the students sharing the stage with their colleagues from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Veronica Lewis, Director of LCDS, commented: "Movement Studies is a much needed initiative to promote dance as a curriculum subject at university degree level in Italy. We welcome many international students every year at London Contemporary Dance School, and it was exciting to see such a vibrant response in Naples and Prato. We always aim to create the best possible conditions for our students to help them achieve their full potential. It is very pleasing that dance is finally becoming a recognised academic subject, not just in the UK, but worldwide."
