2008 

Section A Entries
Entries are welcome from UK based professional choreographers working within any style in a contemporary idiom.

1.
Entries must be in the name of a single person (or two named persons) who identify themselves as the choreographer (or joint-choreographers) of the commissioned work.

2.
Entrants, their dancers and their collaborators must all be professional, ie being engaged in making dance as part of their profession.

3.
Entrants, their dancers and and their collaborators must be resident in the UK.

4.
Neither the entrant, the dancers nor their collaborators may be a full or part-time undergraduate or foundation course student in a degree-granting programme or equivalent between 14 July and 27 September 2008. The entrant must not be be a full or part-time undergraduate or foundation course student in a degree-granting programme or equivalent between 10 March and 27 September 2008.

5.
Entry is by a MiniDV videotape of no more than three minutes including titles accompanied by a signed entry form. Applications which exceed three minutes including titles or which arrive without a signed entry form will not be eligible.

The MiniDV submitted must be recorded in PAL format and in Standard Play (not Long Play) and not in DVCAM mode.

Please leave 10 seconds of black (or colour bars) at the beginning of the tape.

6.
The Place Prize is a choreographic competition for the stage; whilst video, film, animation and new technology may be elements within live work, dance created for the screen is ineligible.

7.
Only one entry per person is permitted, and multiple entries will be deemed invalid.

8.
Unless otherwise stated entries must arrive no later than the published closing date for the competition: 5pm Thursday 31 January 2008. Proof of postage will not be accepted as proof of delivery and no responsibility can be accepted for entries lost or delayed.

9.
The Place accepts no responsibility for the return of entries or other personal effects, or for loss or damage to such items.

10.
Entrants and their dancers/other collaborators as relevant must be available:

  • if shortlisted to make a studio presentation to the selection panel on one day between March 10 2008 and March 20 2008

if selected:     

  • to attend The Place Prize briefing meeting April 2 2008
  • to complete their technical rehearsal day in the Robin Howard Dance Theatre on one day between August 4 2008 and September 1 2008
  • to give preview, semi-final and, if selected, final performances between Septemeber 2 2008 and September 27 2008

11.
Entrants who rehearse at The Place must be available for fifteen days between July 14 2008 - September 1 2008. Whilst every effort will be made to accommodate entrants availability, The Place reserves the right to allocate dates and times at our convenience.

12.
Entrants agree that a clip of up to 3 seconds from their entry video may be subsequently used by The Place for promotion of The Place Prize, including publication on this website.


Section B Comissioned Choreographers


13.
The Place will meet the cost of hiring rehearsal space for a minimum of fifteen days, five hours per day or hourly equivalent for commissioned choreographers based outside London. Hire costs must be agreed before confirmation of booking.

14.
The Place reserves the right to recoup all or part of the commission funds of £5,000 if the commissioned choreographer does not complete a fully-produced fifteen minute work by the agreed date of their technical rehearsal.

15.
The copyright of the work remains with the choreographer. The Place has first refusal over any subsequent presentation of the work and any longer work which contains elements of the commissioned work.

16.
Commissioned choreorgraphers agree to enter an agreement with Place-approved third-parties regarding print, broadcast and online media coverage of The Place Prize. The full three minute entry videos of each commissioned choreographer will be published on this website.

17.
The commissioners and the judges reserve the right to sanction or to not sanction any entrant or commissioned choreographer who is found to be in breach of these regulations.

18.
The commissioners' and judges' decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.


Section C Technical Regulations

19.
Lighting plans and technical details of the piece must be delivered to The Place technical office by 11am on the Monday of the week prior to the commission choreographer’s technical rehearsal. For example, if a technical rehearsal is on any day in the week commencing August 4 2008 we will require your information by July 28 2008. Failure to comply to this clause will result in the company being restricted to the basic rig only.

20.
A sufficiently experienced lighting designer must be employed by the commissioned choreographer. Where necessary The Place’s Technical Manager will determine suitability, and his decision is final. The Place will contribute up to £500 towards lighting designers’ fees to each commissioned choreographer.

21.
It is the responsibility of the commissioned choreographer to allocate sufficient time for their lighting designer to produce focus notes in conjunction with the Place technical crew.

22.
The commissioned choreographer’s lighting designer must be present at all allotted technical periods and performances up to and including the first night of the finals if the company is successful.

23.
The technical rehearsal time in the theatre is for technical purposes alone. Creative work or rehearsals should not be undertaken.

24.
In the event of a commissioned choreographer believing his/her piece has been compromised by a technical failure the judges will decide if the piece needs to be re-presented. The judges’ decision is final.

25.
No changes that involve technical alterations will be permitted between the commissioned choreographer’s preview and semi-final performances without the permission of The Place’s Technical Manager or Chief Electrician.


Section D After The Place Prize

26.
Commissioned Choreographers agree to undertake promotional activity for The Place Prize throughout 2008 and for one year afterwards. Footage for news and promotional purposes may be filmed and broadcast without payment to or permission from the artists involved.

27.
The Place Prize logo and the line credit 'Created with the support of The Place Prize sponsored by Bloomberg' must be included on all print, brochures, programmes and web-based publicity for subsequent performances of work commissioned by The Place Prize.
