Spring Loaded, the annual season at The Place showcasing the brightest talents of UK and International contemporary choreography, returns from 4 May to 18 June 2011.
The programme includes Antonia Groves' Probe much awaited collaboration with writer Tim Crouch, May (Wed 4 & Thu 5 May), a daring new piece of dance theatre, followed by Sonia Sabri Company‘s Kathakbox (Sat 7 May), in collaboration with hip-hop artist Jonzi D and poet Zena Edwards, merging the powerful grace of Kathak dance with beat-boxing and multi-lingual spoken word.
Performer and video maker Albert Quesada and The Place Prize semi-finalist Vera Tussing are premiering Trilogy (Tue 10 May), a piece in three acts exploring the relationship between different musical structures and body language, before Mayuri Boonham's ATMA Dance (Thu 12 May) presents two pieces: Sivaloka, inspired by the stunning Elephanta caves in the vicinity of Mumbai, and Ghatam, a homage to American composer Steve Reich's iconic composition 'Drumming', featuring the beautiful sound of the classical Indian percussion instrument ghatam.
5 Soldiers (Sat 14 May), by Rosie Kay Dance Company, is a thought-provoking piece following the physical and psychological transformation of soldiers at war, created by choreographer Rosie Kay and visual artist David Cotterel, after intense research periods spent with the British Army 4th Battalion, and the Joint Forces Medical Group respectively. Acclaimed choreographer Charles Linehan presents The Fault Index (Thu 19 May), in which three ensemble pieces weave together disparate choreographic elements in a spirited tour the force.
One of the most exciting choreographers to have attracted the critics' attention, Frauke Requardt (Electric Hotel, 2010) presents the UK premiere of Episode (Fri 3 & Sat 4 June), in which a colourful sequence of events captures riotous relationships in an unusual and darkly atmospheric setting. Episode has been commissioned and supported by The Place and by the European Dancehouse Network Modul project. Menage a Trois (Wed 8 June) is a triple bill surveying the work of choreographer Gary Clarke, including the bold, brash and brutally honest Horsemeat, the send-up of peculiarly British stand-up 2 Men & a Michael, and the London premiere of his new Bagofti, a dark and tormented piece influenced by the work of iconic British painter Francis Bacon.
Reel Lives with Hofesh Shechter (Thu 9 June), a collection of inspirational filmed moments in the history of dance, will feature, on this occasion, the favourite screen-dances of Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter, before French choreographer and hip-hop artist Mickael Marso Riviere presents La Porte and Etienne Pas (Sat 11 June), reflecting on the idea of life after death and out-of-body experiences. This double bill is completed by Supple, choreographer and Artistic Director of Sky 1 HD's popular programme Got To Dance, presenting his new piece EDD!!! (Exploring, Discovering & Developing), in which words, sounds and movement are energetically combined together.
Rachel Lopez de la Nieta returns with The Devil and The Details, a humorous piece created for The Place Prize Semi-finals 2010 (Tue 14 June), in an evening with Tel Aviv artists Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor presenting Big Mouth, a deeply and personal examination of the clash between individual identity and Israeli collective consciousness.
Spring Loaded programme rounds off with Something Or Nothing (Thu 16 June), a show by renowned performer and director Guy Dartnell, exploring mistaken identities with his trademark wit and frankness, blending video, performance, storytelling and stand-up techniques, followed by In Good Company (Sat 18 June), an evening of new works from the exceptional dancers of Hofesh Shechter Company.
