The Place  is a key venue each year for Dance Umbrella - London's annual international dance festival.

Dance Umbrella's programme for The Place over the years has included intimate performances from international stars like Mark Morris, Philippe Decouffle and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker along with new artists from around the world and commissioned work from British dancemakers.

In 2011, the Dance Umbrella festival will include a season of “at home” performances from Richard Alston Dance Company at The Place from Wed 19 – Sat 22 October, featuring new works by Richard Alston and Martin Lawrance, and a revival of Robert Cohan’s sextet, In Memory, created for LCDT in 1969.

Prior to each RADC at home performance, a new collaboration between The Place and Dance Umbrella will present Alston Takes Cover. Choreographers Tony Adigun, Rachel Lopez de la Nieta and Moreno Solinas & Igor Urzelai will create short “cover versions” of Alston's Wildlife, bringing their own interpretations to Richard’s work, performed by EDge, the postgraduate company of London Contemporary Dance School.

Dance Umbrella at The Place in 2011 will also feature works by

  • Caterina Sagna
  • Benoît Lachambre and Louise Lecavalier
  • Nelisiwe Xaba and Mamela Nyamza (double bill)
  • Mathurin Bloze and Hedi Thabet

The Place is also supporting a site-specific production for Dance Umbrella by our Work Place artist Rosemary Lee, entitled Square Dances and featuring over 200 performers dancing in the local squares of Bloomsbury on Sat 8 and Sun 9 October.
