CAT Satellite Centres
Over the last two years a major joint initiative between The Place and Laban was the development of outreach and satellite provision with regional partners in the South East Regions:
- The Point in Eastleigh, Hampshire (Partner: The Place)
- Hampshire Dance, (Partner: The Place)
- The Brook Theatre, Chatham, Kent with Loop Dance Company(Partner: Laban)
- Brighton & Hove Music, Arts and Study Support (BHMAS) in Brighton (Partner: The Place)
- University Centre Folkestone with Loop Dance Company (Partner: Laban/Find Your Talent)
This year projects are to continue and will offer roaming taster workshops across the South East Region.
In 2009 The Place CAT piloted two satellite centres in the South East in partnership with The Point in Eastleigh and Brighton & Hove Music, Arts and Study Support (BHMAS) in Brighton. The pilots were funded by the Music and Dance Scheme and marked a significant development of the outreach work delivered through The Place CAT. The pilots commenced with a series of outreach workshops in schools, followed by a selection process and a series of weekly classes. The projects were delivered between January and May with nine students auditioning successfully to one or both of the London CAT programmes.
A comprehensive evaluation process sought feedback from partners, teachers, assistants, musicians, students, parents and the London CAT management team. Both pilots were deemed very successful by those instrumental in its delivery and those who benefited directly from the training provided. During the evaluation process we determined the areas of the project which needed further development and asked for feedback about how we might improve our offer to both our partners, selected applicants and the local dance ecology.
Following this consultation process both partners expressed their desire and enthusiasm to develop the pilot scheme into a sustainable regional centre in partnership with The Place CAT.
Update 2010-11
Satellite partners wil be delivering taster workshops for young people in schools in across the South East Region region.
The initiative hopes to raise the profile and awareness of the opportunities offered through the CATs and build stronger links with schools, artists and arts organisations outside of London. Our work in the region will also include continued professional development opportunities for artists and dance teachers in the South East and where possible ensure that all the young people taking part are signposted to local dance activities.
