Jeannie Steele, Lecturer in Contemporary Technique and Repertoire at London Contemporary Dance School and a former member of Merce Cunningham Dance Company, features in this year's "A Feeling for Practice" talk in the Dance Umbrella 2009 festival.
Entitled "What Training for What Choreography", the talk focuses on the impact of training.
Dancers train long and hard to attain the skill and artistry they need to reach the peak of their profession but how do particular training techniques equip dancers for different types of work? How do choreographers use and develop training techniques to ensure that their dancers have the tools needed for the work being created?
Jeannie appears with Gill Clarke, a highly respected dance artist and teacher, to explore these questions from two very different points of view. Dancers, both live and on film, will illustrate their presentations.Facilitated by Dick McCaw, this is a rare opportunity to understand the inner workings of dance, and promises to be entertaining and revealing.
A Feeling for Practice is at the Southbank Centre's Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Sunday 18 October at 3.30pm. Tickets cost £7 (concs 50% off - limited availability). To book, see the Dance Umbrella website or call 0844 412 4312.
