The Young Dancers Saturday Programme offers a range of dance activities for young people with a passion and enthusiasm for dance.

Classes focus on contemporary and creative dance for complete beginners to advanced students, as well as compositional sessions for aspiring choreographers.  The programme provides participants with plenty of enjoyable options, whether you are seeking a fun way to exercise or structured dance progression; there is something for everyone at The Place.

All classes are designed to develop rhythmic, spatial and body awareness, together with creativity, concentration and physical skills. Most classes are accompanied by live music whilst some creative sessions use recorded music to help develop expressiveness and appreciation in a range of music styles.  

Ages are given as a guide only - teachers will ensure that dancers are put in a class appropriate for their level of ability.

There is a £5 discount for the second and every subsequent class booked either for the same student or a sibling.

Parents of children attending the Young Dancers Saturday Programme are eligible for concession prices for our Saturday classes for adults

ABOUT THE CLASSES

First Moves (5-7yrs)
£90 per term

Take your first dance steps in a session bubbling over with fun and excitement. These classes explore the elements of dance and music in an imaginative and stimulating way. Children play with rhythmic movement sequences in order to develop their physical skills and musicality. Freedom of expression is encouraged and nurtured through the use of imagery and structured improvisation. (back to top)


New Moves (7-9 yrs)

£95 per term

Children explore movement ideas in a variety of interesting and imaginative ways.  Children will learn new dance skills, whilst developing their co-ordination and physicality. This class encourages participants to discover and explore the relationship between dance and music in order to develop their creative expression. (back to top)


Fresh Moves (9-11yrs & 12-16yrs)

£99 per term
London Borough of Camden subsidises Camden residents to take this class at a heavily discounted rate - please contact us for details.

Young people with no previous experience are recommended to try this innovative introduction to dance which explores a variety of dance styles and dynamics. 

Fresh Moves is an innovative dance class designed to appeal to young people between the ages of 9-13 years. Creativity is the central theme with participants exploring dance through a range of fun and imaginative movement exercises. Students will experience current dance and music styles and have the opportunity to create their own dance movement. These classes are appropriate for complete beginners and dancers who are looking for a more creative out-let. (back to top)


Energiser (boys only, 9-11 & 12-16yrs)

£95 per term

This boys class is intended to push physicality and athleticism to their limits in a rigorous and energetic dance class. This fast-paced class allows boys to build strength, stamina and flexibility in a stimulating and creative environment. Boys are introduced to the principles of contemporary dance through carefully structured movement sequences and lively dance phrases. This new class is suitable for all levels and offers a rare opportunity for participants to engage in a boys only environment. (back to top)


Contemporary Levels 1-5 (9-18 yrs)

£99 per term

These classes develop technical expertise and musicality in classes focussed on developing a broad range of dance movement.

The principles of contemporary dance technique are taught in these inspired sessions led by our team of expert teachers. Classes focus on developing technical expertise, strength, coordination, alignment, and flexibility. Students learn movement sequences and dance phrases with a strong emphasis on rhythmic precision and musicality.  Creative tasks are given to encourage the development of individual expressiveness and choreographic skills.

These classes are levelled by age and experience with Level 4 suitable for those with considerable dance experience and those who are preparing to audition for vocational dance schools. (back to top)


Choreography (9-18 yrs)

£99 per term

The essence of creating dance is explored through practical assignments and structured improvisation. Students are encouraged to discover common elements in dance, music, visual art and literature. This class is suitable for young people with an interest in choreography or students working towards GCSE.

Each year promising young choreographers are invited to participate in Sound Moves.   This project provides an opportunity for choreographers to collaborate with composers of the same age from the Royal College of Music’s junior department.  (back to top)

On Saturday 15th May there will be a Special Programme of events to celebrate The Place's 40th birthday. There will be no classes on that day.

The Young Dancers' annual summer performances will take place in the Robin Howard Dance Theatre on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th July 2010.

Due to high demand the availability of places in the Young Dancers Saturday Programme are often limited.  Parents or young people who are interested in taking dance classes are encouraged to register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
