The Place announces the annual End of Year Season, in which graduating students from London Contemporary Dance School perform a varied and excellent programme, marking the completion of their training at one of the world’s leading conservatoires.
The season includes In Performance: Postgraduate Alumni, which will feature the work created by MA Choreography Alumnae Simonetta Alessandri (Dog Roses), Marguerite Caruana Galizia (Strange Loop), and Eva Recacha (Story Lines) on Tue 26 & Wed 27 June. The Postgraduate Performances will celebrate the work produced by the Postgraduate Choreography course over a period of 11 years, performed by London Contemporary Dance School’s alumni.
EDge, the postgraduate performance company of London Contemporary Dance School will be presenting a repertoire that has been toured around Europe by the company’s 12 dancers since March 2012, featuring Matthias Sperling’s Dances with Purpose; James Wilton’s Through Shards; a re-staged version of Sasha Waltz’s String Quartet Nr. 1; and Rachel Lopez de La Nieta’s Rite for Richard, and Tony Adigun’s Unleashed, both inspired by Richard Alston’s iconic Wildlife (Thu 28 June – Sat 30 June).
The Graduation Performances (Fri 6 - Fri 13 July) will feature over 40 graduating students performing specially commissioned works by professional choreographers Janice Garrett, director of Garrett + Moulton Productions in San Francisco, and Rick Nodine, LCDS’s Lecturer in Choreography and Improvisation; The Place’s Artistic Director Richard Alston has also restaged his latest piece A Ceremony Of Carols, originally commissioned by The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury and Sadler’s Wells, for LCDS graduating students. A selection of the students’ own choreography, chosen from the body of work created over the last year, will complete the programme.
For the dancers, the Graduation Performances represent the culmination of their time at London Contemporary Dance School, completing their BA in Contemporary Dance and Postgraduate Diploma in Advance Dance Studies. During the courses they work with leading artists from around the world, creating, rehearsing and perfecting their skills as dance artists. The diverse range of works shows the breadth of their studies; the excellence of the performance demonstrates the quality of their training.
On average, 90% of London Contemporary Dance School students go on to professional employment each year. Among those who have been chosen to join leading contemporary dance and theatre companies this year are Andrew Hawkins and Charlie Hendren, who will both work with Peut-être theatre company; Evangelia Chatzak, who will be joining Mark Brew Company; and Emily Crouch, who will be working with Opera’ de Bauge, in France. Postgraduate students who have completed the LCDS Apprenticeship scheme and have been confirmed as full members of professional dance companies include Ellen Yilma, who is becoming a full member of Tavaziva Dance Company; Marta Masiero, who will be working professionally with Small Petit Klein; and Leila Bakhtali, who will join Wee Dance Company, in Gorlitz, Germany after her apprenticeship with Scottish Dance Theatre.
