ABOUT CHISATO
Chisato is a deaf dancer, choreographer and tutor. She trained at the Laban Centre and Yokohama National University and has created and performed work in 14 countries, including her native Japan. She was a member of CandoCo Dance Company from 2003-2006, after which she began performing her own choreography. She presented SCOT for Resolution! at The Place in 2007.
ABOUT THE WORK
The Canon for Duet pursues the question Chisato, as a deaf chroeographer, strives to address in all of her work: What is visual music? and how can it be created through contemporary dance. Working with film, sound and silence, she explores music both visually and aurally. Chisato gives important emphasis to two relationships: the dancer's face to her hand, and the dancer's movement in relation to space and time. Both movement and sound start off simply and then become more complex.
