This one-year course is aimed at artists who have a good grasp of choreography and have begun to establish their own choreographic voice.

This specialisation is appropriate for students who have demonstrated distinctive creative ability in dance and who have an established background in choreography. It has proved particularly fruitful for mature students who have been choreographing for some time and wish to take time to reflect on their work within a supportive environment.

Following a short course exploring ways to reflect upon and expand their practice, students undertake three practical choreographic projects:

  • a solo created for a studio space
  • a group piece for full theatrical production
  • a practice-based research project

The final project questions the common parameters of dance and could take the form of a site-specific work, an installation, a video, a collaborative piece, a work involving non-trained dancers or a work which investigates other dance genres in a contemporary dance context.

The school is developing a particular interest in the use of projection in conjunction with live performance and has experience of supporting this exploration. Technical advice is available for the manipulation of live video and its integration with live dance.

Choreography students show their work in the Robin Howard Dance Theatre as well as in the studio and and site-specific contexts. Students receive advice and practical support in costuming, scenography, music and all technical aspects of their work. All productions are lit by professional lighting designers.

While they have the full support of a dedicated supervisor, students find their own dancers, book their own space and direct their own rehearsals with help where necessary. In this way they develop the practical as well as creative skills to progress in the world of professional dance.

Applicants will need to submit a video of their recent choreography and write about two of their pieces.
