London Contemporary Dance School’s postgraduate department has been running since 1993, and was the first of its kind offering the Postgraduate Diploma and MA degree to students wishing to pursue practical dance studies as a postgraduate discipline.

The Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Contemporary Dance provides students with opportunities to develop their skills at a vocationally relevant level, forging the transition from student to professional dance artist. It also supports dance artists at points of change in their careers.

Our taught postgraduate programmes specialise in four areas of study:

The postgraduate department works in partnership with the dance profession to offer a programme of considerable breadth and depth, giving students a context for their continuing training and development. The department fosters self-directed learning and individual progress, and provides a fertile educational environment for the creation of self-reflective, independent dance artists who may successfully pursue portfolio careers, or enter mainstream employment as professional dance artists. The courses are informed by the expertise that exists throughout The Place and by an extraordinary level of engagement with visiting professionals. Apprentices working in host companies benefit from close collaboration with professional dance artists who work in partnership with the department at LCDS.

Students gaining the appropriate grades during the Postgraduate Diploma may wish to apply to complete the MA degree following a period of independent research. The work presented for assessment can be practical and theoretical, or wholly written.
