Following the last External Exam Board in July 2011, the University of Kent has agreed an extension to the time frame for students who have completed their PGDip and wish to continue their study to Master of Arts.

In the past it was necessary for students graduating from Postgraduate Diploma courses to complete their MA studies within two years of receiving their PGDip awards, students will now have a further six years to complete MA work.

The six year time-frame begins at the point of registration; this means students on full-time courses will have five years to complete their MA and students who were registered part-time for two years will have four years to complete. Students who had periods of intermission during their PGDip studies will have proportionally less time.

We are therefore inviting anyone who graduated between 2007 and 2011 with eligibility to proceed to the MA to submit proposals to allow them to continue their education with LCDS on an MA course.

Eligibility

All students who have passed all elements of the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) including the Academic Essay in Module 1, and who averaged a total of 60% in Module 2 are eligible to continue their studies at LCDS for the qualification Master of Arts. Work for this conversion is through independent research with the guidance of a supervisor. Projects can be wholly written or ‘mixed mode’; that is, practical and written. To pass the MA, students must pass both the practical and written elements of the project. Assessment of mixed-mode projects is normally weighted towards the practical element (practical [60%] and written [40%]); the exact weighting will be discussed on an individual basis and agreed in advance.

The assessment structure of the MA degree is as follows:
Postgraduate Diploma taught- course programme              50%
Masters Independent research dissertation or project        50%

Applying for your MA

Students should complete MA proposal forms (please email ) and forward these to Mary Evelyn, Head of Postgraduate Studies who will then ensure that they are discussed with the Research Panel at LCDS. Currently the panel is as follows: Sue MacLennan, Henrietta Bannerman, David Steele and Mary Evelyn.

Students are welcome to discuss their ideas and receive guidance from relevant tutors prior to submission of their formal proposals.

The School has very limited studio space available so we are unfortunately unable to offer this as a resource for rehearsals to our MA Conversion students, but tutorial supervision, guidance and library facilities will be available as well as housing the performance/presentation in a suitable space. It is possible to negotiate this project to be prepared at locations other than London.
