The Place offers enjoyable and stimulating dance classes for children and young people aged of 6-15. Classes take place on Saturdays during term time are booked on a term by term basis.
Students attending Saturday classes have the opportunity to perform in a variety of settings including The Place’s Robin Howard Dance Theatre and local festivals. Intensive courses are run for young dancers during the summer and Easter holidays, with additional workshops held during the October and February half terms.
Taught by highly experienced teachers, choreographers and dance companies, these classes and courses are designed to encourage creativity and develop technical expertise, whilst aiming to nurture individual expressiveness and musicality. Complimenting the weekly classes are The Place’s two youth dance companies Shuffle and Shift who represent The Place at a range of platforms across London and the South East.
Musical accompaniment is an important contributor to the success and enjoyment of our children and youth dance provision. Throughout the year our team of talented musicians will accompany classes with live percussion, piano and synthesised music, classes will also use recorded music to provide students with a wide breadth of musical influences and stimuli. Dancers particularly interested in choreographing to original musical compositions, can apply to take part in our annual collaboration project with the Royal College of Music’s Junior Department.
In addition to the regular activities hosted at The Place there are a range of community and youth dance events run in conjunction with The Place’s Theatre and Artist Development Team and partner organisations across London. Current projects include ReFRESH and Bloomsbury Festival.
Youth dance classes are currently held on Monday and Wednesday evenings for students aged between 16-18 years. There is also a complete timetable of classes and courses for dancers aged 16+ throughout the week and during holiday periods.
